MOMA NYC day 4

So the next day we hit up MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) and we were welcomed by this woman who was jamming the hell out of her piano all whilst navigating it through the large open space...oh yeah by being inside of it......performance art.

Can't remember this artists name, oh well...I loved the subdued color and theangular lines.

The cool thing about MOMA is that in and of itself is a beautiful work of art, great views from inside of the museum.

-part of athe architecture exhibit which were small scaled models of amazing buildings from all over the world.

This large bridge was made of steel wool.

Lichensteins hand painted dot pattern is amazing ...i can do it in seconds using illustrator though. haha , No for real , not taking anything away from this amazing pop artists, I love the subject matter and postures of the characters.

Starry Night, this is the second time I had seen most of these pieces, as most of them toured through the Art Museum of Houston a few years ago, but yeah..there it is in all its swirly glory.

Rene Magritte...the father of surrealism. This painting used to intrigue me the most probably of any painting in my old art history books, maybe it is because you have to put yourself in a time where most serious painters never painted out of the box or purely from and perhaps for the subconscious. This is an amazing piece to see in person.

Metropolitan Museum of Art

So day 3 of NY landed us in museum land. We visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art which graciously displays 5000 years of art..and well we had to check it out. heres what we saw.

The entrance to the museum welcomes you into the ancient Egyptian art and it was pretty overwhelming. We probably spent a good 3-4 hours checking the museum out, but 3 or 4 hours could have easily been spent just checking out all of the awe inspiring Egyptian art. This enormous sphinx was a pleasure to see...

as was the Mickey Mouse ride we ran across in Brooklyn earlier that was clearly inspired by it.

This was an ornate ceiling of an aristocrat from somehere or another. Big balling is nothing new.

I believe these pieces were from the medieval times..could be wrong, going to this museum, actually reminded me of how much art history I've forgotten. The cool thing about this book was the embelisshments and writing using gold leaf or something near it.

This gruesome yet awesome rosary caught our eye also, it was carved from ivory and features small sculptures on half skeleton/half human face throughout it. The detail was amazing, yet creepy.

This is definitely the headpiece I'd step out with when going to battle.

Reminded me of Frazetta's Death Dealer. The armor and arms section of the museum was sweeeet.

I loved the attention to detail in the stitching of this.

As we blazed through the museum, seeing probably only about a quarter of what it had to offer, we came across the modern art section on our way out and was pretty pumped to see these pieces.

Amazing painting of a waterfall, by an artist I cant remember...this was a huge canvas with very realistic painted landscapes, but the backstory was that the painter created this for friends of his that died of AIDS, and within this painting are some names and other inscriptions written within the painting that are disguised when you see it from afar, but when up close you can readily read what the artists had in mind. real cool.

Salvador Dali's CRUCIFIXION has always been one of my favorite art pieces , and it was amazing to see in person. I've long been a huge fan of Dali's work, but have always seemed somewhat cheated when seeing his smaller pieces in person, but this large work more than made up for my past thoughts. The detail was insane, and it was surreal...for lack of a better word to see the paint strokes that created this powerful image. The top image is a detailed shot of the painting. the woman in the painting is actually Dali's wife, Gala, who was often seen in various paintings by the artist.

Picasso's "Dying Bull" - This is the period when Pablo was painting multiple angles in one painting for am old school 3D effect of sorts...anyways-it was cool, and I cant wait to go back one day and see the remainder of the museum.

Brooklyn, Lower East Side street art and boutiques -day 2

So day 2 started with a trip to check out some shops on the Lower East Side heres some flicks from the walk to the subway into the city.

This large mural was painted in the parking lot of a school. This is just a small portion of the work that surrounded the parking lot.

..and this dope 3-D graffiti piece was on the same block as the school..amazing detail.

Stickers in the Lower East Side.

We were on our way to SUPREME and was wowed by a window display from a funky high heel spot called Irregular Choice. Irregular Choice is from what i gather a London company that creates some really fun and inventive womens shoes. Each shoe looked like a customized piece of art, which I can respect from a customizer standpoint. Erica was in shoe heaven, and rightly so, the shoes were fun just to look at, and the buildout of the store was whimsical and fun. The lovely Anastasia Blades who helped Erica with her precious purchase was welcoming and friendly and was excited to tell us more about the company and the culture that it came from. She was one of the most down New Yorkers we came across, and she is an amazing photographer as well. Good people.

Then we went on to peruse Supreme and was underwhelmed maybe not so much at the clothing, but lack of customer service. This seems to be somewhat trendy I guess for more well known shops, but for the life of me I have no idea why. On to the next one...

Heres some Beatles vinyl in the storefront of THE REED SPACE which was my favorite streetwear spot we dropped into. The space had some great tees, fitteds, bags, books, music, and vinyl toys. Nigo and the rest of the staff were great. The atmosphere was comfortable and they had great products-like some great silver rings of MPC's and Studio Monitors...sweet. I scooped a Mike Tyson tee, Erica a bag, and then we traversed.

On the walk , noticed this dope monopoly man on the 1's and 2's...respect.

Sweet hat press in some cool hat shop we stopped in, cant remember the name. I almost scooped a hat there, but my head was too big for the styles I liked.

Heres THE NEW MUSEUM which unfortunatley was closed the day we came across it. Awesome architecture.

Then we came across the coolest toy store I'd ever been in. TOY TOKYO kicked ass. The store was pacjked with the most rare and awesome vinyl toys produced. The stff was cool as ice, and let us take pics of everything but a huge KAWS collection they have behind a second set of doors...ballers only. We happily scooped up an Eric Scarecrow shogun girl and toured the store like it was a museum.

A great selection of Ron English toys were readily available also. On a sidenote -see if you can see one of our stickers on this picture from his website of Art Basel . Seems like our stickers are getting around, thanks to all our supporters.

These Kaws tweety toys almost came home with us...except that we would have had to starve for the rest of the trip so we opted against them.

That supersized Ron English Ronald McDonald is nuts, as was the KAWS disected joint.

After leaving Toy Tokyo we decided to check out another vinyl toy store being that it was in the vicinity. My Plastic Heart had some decent picks, but they fell victim to the "to cool to say hi" disease, which is imperative when there is noone else in the shop, anyways- threw them the deuce-no scoops there.
We then caught the subway to the city so we could check out FAO SCHWARZ maybe the most known toy store in NY. It was pretty awesome, wish I had been there when i was little, but hey, it was still pretty cool.

Heres one of probably 4 or 5 huge toy soldiers made up of jelly beans....like whoah.

Ah yes, and perhaps the most fun of the day goes to creating our own muppets. You pretty much got to choose your body, eyes, nose, hair, accessories, and clothes, and then muppet makers glue and stitch them together right in front of you as you wait..this was uber awesome. The above pic was Erica's first concept...it changed, and became what you see below.

Brooklyn Street Art day 1

Heres some pics and such from our trip to New York last month..after a busy but awesome holiday season , I am just now getting to rummage through the pictures of street art, toys, boutiques, and food we discovered and came across.
Being that we took a lot of pics, i will be posting a days worth for every day this week..or at least the next few days anyways. enjoy.

So we got into New York on a Saturday evening, and immediately caught a cab to the apartment we had rented for the week via Austin company Home Away (awesome site to rent furnished apartments and homes instead of hotels). After settling in for maybe all of 15 minutes we trecked on a 2 mile walk through Bushwick to the Trophy Bar to catch one of our favorite DJ's Squincy Jones spin a set. Squincy is a Houston based DJ who just so happened to be rocking the spot in Brooklyn with some Down South flavor...while listening we became aquainted with the $6 beer and shot combos...which did end up haunting us a bit later....however thats neither here nor there...heres some flicks we caught on the walk.

Brooklyn is pretty awesome if you are an art lover there is street art almost literally every footyou take --andin all shapes and forms. I especially loved a piece (no pic-damn) i saw on a wooden post which was a woodcut and hand painted graffiti piece which was then nailed onto the post. I was more amazed though when taking the subways of how many heaven spots you see that are just killed..and over killed, then killed again..pretty inspiring.

So after a long night of being lost in the cold rain...but after enjoying one bomb deli sammich, we started the next day with some tortilla soup from Life Cafe then headed to Williamsburg to peep the streetwear boutique, Boundless which had some pretty nice gear along with a friendly staff and a warm refuge from the cold day. Heres a flick of a wall that interested me along the way.

After that we took the subway to Manhattan and walked around aimlessly, pretty much just taking in all the awesomness that is the fashion district...and all the whackness which was corporate holiday BS being shoved down throats..Macy's did it at least the most entertaining way though with some great engineered puppet window displays/animation/shows and this cool "Believe" lit up.

Heres a shot just looking up in the fashion district.

Then back to the crib where we were surrounded by the art of the owner of the apartment we stayed at. This particular one was made of old printers, and had extreme detail of origami figures that were about the size of a fingernail that were positioned on the "space station"...it was cool.

NEW Poster/Flier Design: Gary Clark Jr at Antones January 7

Heres the latest design we did for the Gary Clark Jr show at Antones this Friday, December 7th. Conceptually we wanted it to look like a used and abused scrap piece of paper at a screen print shop...the text was generated and frazzled using illustrator, while the photographic image was actually manipulated in photoshop.

Ideally we would have liked to add some more rough touches to it in PS, along with "registration" marks and hand written notes on top of the image...but alas, a quick deadline is a quick deadline....

New Photography: BIG BOI in Austin

Big Boi of Outkast performed at the East Side Drive In last week brought by Knuckle Rumbler and Transmission Entertainment.
The show was awesome loca;/regioanl DJ's Peligrosa started the evening with some great dance/hip hop going on and the got the night en route, after that there was a really horrible rock/rap band from Atlanta that pretty much lost all the crowds interest-dont know there name, but apparently they were co-signed by Big Boi as he had them onstage with him for one of his newest songs.

Cool though, because we used their set time to walk around the venue and chop it up with some friends and such. After that, Big Boi took the stage and crushed opening with a slew of Outkast hits and southernplayalistickcadillacmusic and such. Great show, super loud sounds that had my ears ringing even the next day...then again I was directly in front of a speaker getting these photos for you guys and gals. enjoy.

NEW DESIGN: WuTang Clan x Phranchyze at Emo's

Here is a poster/flier we designed for the upcoming Wu Tang Clan and Phranchyze show at Emo's on Saturday, December 11th.
From what I understand the whole clan minus Ole Dirty (R.I.P) will be on hand to bring the ruckus. Hometown hero, Phranchyze offer support hot off the release of his latest project "The Black Larry Bird" should be an awesome show.

ARTOMATIC

ARTOMATIC was a 2 day event and celebration of arts at the Historic Victory Grill during the East Austin Studio Tour (E.A.S.T.) . The event was an art market, concert, and art show.
The event featured laser projection bombing, multimedia,bad ass music, high fives, and a 24 hr paint session.

Special shouts out to our friend Arthur who helped a bunch and had a booth set up with hiss designed tees...sorry we missed it with the photos, next time man.

This was a 24 hr paint session collaboration by Marc Zuazua and Art Vader

DJ TROUBLE came through to wreck the turntables and jam for a brief time with Hour Band. Troubles scratches are pretty sick. Phranchyze and Hour Band also shared stage.

Amazing oil paintings by artist Nicole Kallenberg. I love the way her pieces offer dramatic lighting as well as a very textural feel. Simply amazing pieces -check out her site, she offers various print options. Nicole is also available for custom pieces.

This was another 24 hr paint session collaboration done by artists Marc Zuazua and Art Vader the previous weekend at Oxblood Fest in South Austin.

Art by Marc Zuazua. Marc is the lead designer for Mofoz Visualz and co-operated the 5th Gallery. His subjects range from popular hip hop icons to women seemingly made of geometric shapes and curves. Marc's new work is heavily layered and uses everything from spray paint, markers, to glued paper and airbrush.

Art by Monika Mullin. Monika does amazing portrait style paintings using acrylics. The original pieces almost look watercolored at some places, but she masterfully blends watered down tones with sharp and expressive lines and contours to create some vibrant pieces if some of pop and hip hop cultures favorite icons.

Art by Padaric Kolander Padaric's painting and drawings on display were amazing. The figurative lines of characters portrayed juxtapoz the open space and definition of the pieces.

Artist Nicole Kallenberg and company. Nicole was painting a pretty cool piece onsite of a woman and a guitar, cant wait to see the finished piece.

Art by Art Vader. Art Vader is an artist from Corpus Christi whose art often portrays spaceships, skeletons, musicians, religious themes, and robots. Highly science fiction inspired and beautiful, bold, colors often characterize his pieces.

Amber Keller is an amazing jewelry maker, illustartor, painter....and general maker of cool things. Her sister was in town to help her create all walks of jewelry. The cool thing about Amber's work is that most pieces are made of found objects that she then recycles into funy and fashionable items...like a gambit and rogue pair of earings. Check out her site Lost and Founded-it has a lot of creative wearables.

Art by famed French graffiti writer Andre aka Monsieur A line the entrabc corridor of the Historic Victory Grill. A few Sxsw's ago i think Belvedere vodka brought the artists through for a party, and he painted said walls, and annoyed said staff haha. artists.

Art by Solomon Perry of Phantazm. Solomon was actually in Houston showing and painting at DJ, Rapid Ric's studio grand opening during Art Crawl Houston. We were glad to have a few pieces from him in Austin to showcase, as well as have him share a few of our pieces in Houston for Ric's awesome event.Solomon is an amazing artists that specializes in 3-D illusions.

Art by John Weber. John Weber is a steel sculpture artists that uses recycled stainless steel for his pieces. Most of John's work is kinetic, meaning that it moves, usually with the wind , and with some of his newer projects with the aid of motorized fans. Real cool stuff.

Here are some shots of the laser bombing. As you caan see from the picture below , the laser pointer's canvas is actually set up behind the painting being collaborated. The camera would follow and track the lasers movements on the canvas which was then projected onto buildings. It was fun to see people get so lost in trying to create legible letters using a laser pointer...good times.

SAN ANTONIO STITCHED UP: TX Streetwear Brands

sooooo after Oxblood festival and coming off of a 24 hr paint session at said festival, we traversed with new sales and account associate/ driver to SA/ Hour Bandian/ Art Basel going to Moshe to show some art and apparel at Stitched Up. Stitched Up is a streetwear show/sale/networking parlay/ dj extravaganza/good time put on by our friends in the Alamo city, Sneaks Up.
For years we've had the pleasure of showing at the annual Sneaks Up show which offers shoe collectors, boutiques , artists, streetwear brands, and hip hop heads a place to chop it up while also jamming to some of the best DJ's San Antonio....naw, TX....naw, the world has to offer haha. There was no shortage of beats and mixes during Stitched Up either.

DMC veteran DJ DONNIE DEE, DJ KIKO, DJ AK and more shared the stage and did some pretty awe inspiring scratch sets. Between that we met up with other brands and shops to talk shop..shirts, and other things.

Big ups to SA SNEAKS UP!! San Antonio, you re lucky to have such a great organization to put on quality events and a community that truly comes out to support. Keep up the awesomeness, my friends.

In showing at this show especially it made me think back to when I first started this ride. Mofoz Visualz was a vision for no holds barred culture brand for hip hop heads. I remember jumping into the game with mad nievity but with that mad hustle, because honestly there was NO other way. Its been probably 6 or 7 (maybe longer, whos counting) years since the company Mofoz Visualz was founded. In that time, we have showed everywhere from coffee shops to galleries, from small venues, to the alamodome and even the las vegas hilton convention center....but Stitched Up was maybe our most enjoyable. It's really, really, good to see so many Texas streetwear brands in one place truly representing not only their creative visions, but also truly representing for their communities.

Running an indy clothing company is something is a truly passionate endeavor...and my hats off to all the brands that showed.

Some of our favorite streetwear brands include GRITS, TOO DOPE (TDK) outa Laredo -whatchyouknowaboutthat, Remix Label, Fur Face Boy, Simply Complicated, Purely Rooted, Million Monkey Clothing and everyone that came through. you guys and gals rock.

Guests of Stitched up got to see some sample versions of our new logo tees that are printed with discharge dye ink....very cool. These will only be available at shows until Mid-late January, then they will hit the web in all their glory.

Custom kicks, canvases and tees were plenty as were complimentary issues of FRANK books., thanks FRANK 151.

Grits is a great clothing brand from Houston, TX we had met them prior at the Sneaker Summits in Houston. GRITS uses really awesome illustartions with beautiful linework in a hand-drawn meets digital sorta way...if that makes sense. Anyway, mostly food based and great colorways keep this line at our attention, and these new Junkfood Junkie Tees are insanely awesome. They were also on hand with a great full color zine- thats whats up. Check out their blog for cool posts and inspiring thoughts for creatives, or pretty much anyone for that matter.

Nerdy Fresh also repping, cogreat colorful tees.

Didnt get the name of the artists but these were nice canvases with basketball superstars as playing cards. cool.

OXBLOOD FEST 2010 in pictures

Being that OXBLOOD FEST was about two weeks ago and the details are now pretty blurry...heres some photos to best describe what went on.

There were like 3 glass blowing shops on hand who were working on location--it was pretty cool.

Henry and the Invisibles was a great act, who had a great r and b, dance sorta vibe. cool act.

Heres another poster/flier designand illustartion we did for the upcoming OXBLOOD FEST who will have grammy winning 9th Wonder headlining.
We loved the deign concept because of our old time love for comics. I wanted it to be somehwat Frank Milleresque so went with the splatter route to create negative and positive space. Designed using Illustartor.

Lance Herbstrong at Oxblood Fest,

Just finished this design last week or so. Design using illustartor. The comic theme was used to match with the previous 9th WOnder at Oxblood Fest we designed as well, will post soon.The concept behind the designs at this fest was that there were just a ton of bands that wouldnt fit properly on one poster..promotion wise this was cool, because the promoter decided to have 3 seperate designs, with each design based on a seperate music genre, which would then be distributed to the specific genre's venues, shows, and respective scene.

This one was geared to the drum and bass lovers, and was sure to showcase the awesome logo and cool antics that the ACL veterans LANCE HERBSTRONG have. enjoy.

Pecan Street Festival 2010 - Hi-Tones

Pecan street Festival is a downtown Austin music and arts fest..happens maybe twice a year. It encompasses a weekend and always has really great bands, great festival food, and usually subpar artisans lined all the way down 6th street.
This year the music was amazing like always- we enjoyed grammy nominated Grupo Fantasma as well as the rock and rollers, The Hi-Tones ..who subsquently have been a big part in putting up the amazing festival for this weekend "DITCH THE FEST" (more on that tomorrow).

We actually did find a few artists that had some pretty nice work this year as well- and scored some amazing prints from Kevin Eslinger as well as a woman named ANNA (lost her contact info. Anyways-always a good time when Pecan Fest rolls around..theres not too often you can legally walk downtown drinking beers with friends.

MUGGZY FLOWZ CD RELEASE PARTY-Recap

So a week or so ago, Muggzy Flowz held his CD release party at the 6th street boutique, SOLE FRESCO. Guests enjoyed tons of giveaways, barbecue, drinks, and some of Austin's finest hip hop acts.

We are happy to see and hear Muggzy's first solo debut project "The Boi Who could Fly". The day was hot as the Texas sun can get, but we still had a great time with true heads and friends.

Muggzy is one of those rare MC's that seems to always "go for the throat" when he grabs a microphone. Whether it be his freestyles or writtens, he always seems to have welll thought punchlines and wordplay. Check the video down below if you dont believe me--count the "quotables" , I dare you.

San Francisco-Art , Shops, and Rock the Bells

So...a few weeks ago we traversed to San Francisco to visit some friends as well as check out the Rock the Bells hip hop festival. In between that we had a chance to check out a little bit of the city..more importantly though, a little more art in the city.
We also had a chance to check out the unique boutiques the bay city has to offer..although the cooler ones didn't allow pictures (we are talking about you lil taxidermy jewelry artist store).
Anyways-heres some pics enjoy.

We stopped by Giant Robot which is a boutique and magazine..as well as art gallery. We were lucky to catch the "HOT PINK FUZZ" Art by Snaggz, Miss Muju and Monyomonyo.

These Nauga Monsters by Miss Muju were awesome...the felt made pieces were very organic and whimsical. The detail in all the pieces were pretty intriguing, and the bright colors were very welcoming to the viewer.Awesome.

The hills of SF are pretty damn cool.

The felt cereal boxes by Snaggs were great- not only because our love for cereal but also because of the great detail along the boxes, the 3-dness of the art, as well as the fun nature of it.

I especially liked the Tooth Blast cereal whiche featured a see through box that showcased the "felt cereal".

Cant remember which shop this was as we blasted through a lot of shops, but this sneaker collection were all autographed by celebrity customers.

I loved this piece, took a shot from the car, didnt get a chance to chek it up close, but the style is amazing.

Copped a cap at TRUE which was a pretty cool sneaker boutique.

well.....then the next day we went to check out the ROCK THE BELLS hip hop festival...no pictures as they wouldnt let "professional" cameras in and we honestly didnt feel like taking pictures by then anyways. Highlights included Wu-Tang Clan killing it- the whole crew was there, and ODB's oldest son took on his pop's duties and did a fairly good job. I also enjoyed seeing a mascot-like dog during Snoop's set crip walking and overall being awesome. Brother Ali also did a great job as did Tribe called Quest who had Bustah Rhymes and Spliff Star join on stage for a surprise performance....good times.

Heres some pictures of some MC inspired custom Adidas Stan Smiths. The writing along the side were lyrics from Rakim as well as NAS. These kicks were triple glossed with high gloss sealant so that when the sun hits them they still look wet. enjoy.

So a Vegas vacation trip just happened to coincide with the MAGIC fashion tradeshow at Mandalay Bay...so we took advantage to check out the scene...this of course after a long vegas night thanks to Complex Magazine and PUMA for hosting the kick ass Puma Social party at a suite in Mandala Bay....no photos of that..and for good reason haha..anyways-We enjoyed checking out the new lines talking to other designers, and brands , as well as generally just get a break from the Vegas sun.

-heres some pictures we took at SLATE (the streetwear portion of Magic) Enjoy.

Austin brand MADGODS had a booth setup and were pretty busy, I was only there for a bout a minute and could hardly say whats up to them before another buyer would swoop in and check out their line. Big ups, as they had their first sell to Moscow I believe--big things indeed.

This dude had mad airbrush sjills--painting for Famous Stars and Straps

These Gucci kicks were laced with KickBars ...bars made of rubies, diamonds, and gold.....hmmm.Imagine how customized your kicks can be with some real jewelry on them. Cool guys these creators of these and the more affordable sneakbars.

Artust, Taylor Reeve was on hand to hand paint a bike for some booth or another.

The homies from SOLE FRESCO were also in attendance to buy new lines and gear for their 6th street Austin shop.

We were digging this tee shirt from the line NO RIVAl...cool designs.

SEVENTH LETTER crew wer also painting live, although we just saw the aftermath. heres a piece by RETNA

Ive liked FLUD watches since I first saw their Turntable watch offering, this year they now offer the boom box style..thats whats up.

NEW ERA's booth was a digital wall for artists or mostly wannabe artists to digitally spray paint choosing different spray size radius, colors, and brush types. Kinda cool.

This pic is awesome of the WORK, Dennis Rodman..its also a tee design from brand, BREEZY EXCURSION

We saw a lot more marketing booth ploys like FRANK's Chop Shop barber chair in their booth, TRIBAL's tattoo shop in booth, Some poor white tiger cub in a small crate at somebody's booth and other eye candy everywhere-but you get the gist of it.

I would have liked to take a picture of some new Marvel character fitted

New Era's that are being done by TKDK...which i believe is TokiDoki in streetwear form...but the dude holding down the booth jumped fast when I got the camera out. GTFOH ...nothings a secret..and youd be surprised by how little people care.

Custom organic Veja Kicks

We painted these custom kicks for our freind Arjan all the way the Amsterdam way.
These sneakers are a brand called Veja, they are organic from what I understand.
Arjan's request was too make them not so loud, and to incorporate something natural. In doing this we created a leaf motif that wraps around the panels, and a painted tree on the heels.

Shadow Paradigm Office..our latest murals

Heres some pictures from inside the Shadow Paradigm office...We helped to paint and imagine this space. The Austin office is home to the management,creative services, and networking of some of Austin's favorite musicians.

The murals showcase emcee Phranchyze, bluesman Gary Clark Jr. , and rock band Hour Band, and soon will feature images for electronic musicians Chopigula.

The space is a community all in its own.
We were happy to work on this project with some of our best friends including artist Rick Osborne as well as the make it happen dude, Kris Krishna.

Everybody in all of these bands as well as friends helped to see this project from start to finish. This space was worked with new flooring, new paint from top to bottom and well pretty much had the input of everyone involved.

Be warned- SHADOW PARADIGM is taking over.

BACK ON THE STREETS Closing party

Heres some pics from the closing party BACK ON THE STREETS show...and what turned out to be closing party for the physical entity of the 5th Gallery.

In the almost 2 years of existence we manage to showcase well over 200 artists, as well as be a stage for everything from open jams, DJ tutorials, circuit bending workshops, and many many good times.

We almost hit the 2 year mark...but alas, the landlord seemed to not dig what we were doing for whatever reason and decided to not re-lease us. Shady answers and such from him..who knows what we were doing wrong, but these pics definitely show what we were doing right.

This party paid homage to the MC's and the graffiti writers, and well even DJ's....The Mic Marathon was a chance for us to invite MC's as well as call out to those that just wasted to be part of the longest cypher we had ever done at the gallery...and for those that have been there on some Friday nights as well as the popular One Take live mixtapes..that was a tall order.
However, this cypher more than represented as the Mic was hot...and sometimes cold, but at all times being rocked for a good 5 hours! 5 hours....5 HOURS...you can watch like the whole star wars trilogy in 5 hrs, I think. Anyways--Tee Double , Phranchyze, Dubb Sicks, Japanese Jesus, Doc Deuce, G Clef ..and tons other grabbed mic and rocked to beats provided by DJ Jazz One and DJ Rock Well.

Oh yeah...all whilst popular Austin graffiti writers painted our boy FATS' VW van. SLOKE ONE, DEFORM, and MEZ ONE crushed on the bus and had passerbyers at times stuck in there tracks...it was awesome.

Thanks to everyone that came out and supported the gallery through any possible aspect. We will continue with our webstore as well as with many more posts about music, art, design, fashion, and culture.

Look for many contributing writers and artists to throw their 2 cents in here every once and again. Thanks again. ALL OTHER GALLERIES SUCK.

One of my good friends bands is having a one night reunion show at Beauty Bar on June 4th.

These guys use to jam in our college-days rental house kitchen and played many shows in San Marcos/Austin. ....so in doing this flier design/illustartion I originally had an old drawing in mind for a flier from the original days that was never used...like 2003 were talkimg. I did find the drawing, but i came across a pencil sketch i did of a face that my friend (in the band) always liked and decided i'd new age it with some vectors.......welll some days later...this is what it is. please click on image to make larger....any comments welcome...this was pretty much some hard practice and a rare revisiting of old work.

Veteran graffiti writer from Los angeles, Chaz Bojorquez installing never before scene art in the Ben Baily Art gallery, texas A&m university, Kingsville(TAMUK).Writers frome Austin, Corpus Christi, and Kingsville joined chaz on contributing their graffiti pieces in a unique live performance project. The art will be showcased at TAMUK through the end of next month.

I've always been a fan of Chaz' and his sick letter styles, as well as his originality. We heard about this project through our Corpus friend DOSE2 , however, with scheduling conflicts unable to make the trip to Kingsville to see this.

5xSW: Fifth Street Cypher

Heres some more pics from SxSW week...5xSW. On the friday of sxsw we hosted at the FIFTH GALLERY , the 5th Street Cypher. This was much like our popular ONE TAKE mixtape series in that we had DJ QUICKIE MART from New Orleans spinning beats and such as a plethora of MC's grabbed mic and freestyled something crazy.
For this particular session Austin phenom ZEALE handled and MC'd the session alongside PHRANCHYZE , Japanese Jesus, Dubb Sicks, and Detroit's freestyle heroes MARV WON, and RO SPIT.
A wide range of other MC's al;so touched mic, however, my memory is lacking. Good thing that OFFSHOOT MEDIA was in the house to film the historic session....video coming soon...heres some flicks.

After the freestyle session, we chilled the tempo at the gallery with Norway's ARTS THE BEAT DOCTOR from the label BEats Broke. Real chill down tempo live production..this dude was ill!! ..so much we invited him back to play an art opening the next week..pics soon on that.

So as Wed morning approached, we were off to Sole Fresco to set up for Phranchyze's CD release of "The Black Larry Bird". The day party at the sneaker store was just what was needed to get the music portion of 5xSW started.

soooo after the 4 hour day party, we had just about an hour to kill before we needed to be at the evening party we were painting at...so we met up with some friends at the Fader Fort to catch "special guests" which turned out to be Nas and Damian Marley....not bad, not bad at all.

Awesome performance by the collaborative effort of NAs and Marley, I cant wait to hear the album they will release soon.

After that awesomeness we headed south a bit to South Austin Soul where the Hiotwire Unlimited x Studio A party was being held..this party was bonkers, however, we didnt get much shots....heres a few we did get.

Gary Clark Jr. performed some new material, and killed it. Gary will sooon be taking stage with some guitar legends in Chicago as he plays the crictically acclaimed Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival. big ups to an ATX representer.

BALCONES BASH...graffiti contest

So last week there was this great event at therecylcing plant that pitted 12 garffiti writers against eachother in a contest, to see who could paint the most awesome train in roughly 3 hours....awesome art, tons of cool people, ATX's best DJ's MC's and B-boys were in the house to show Austin what true hip hop is....and im happy about that.

Anyways--I can go on and on about how cool this event was...but ill let the pics do the talking for now, cuz i have mad design to work on.

So...last week NICE KICKS opened its physical store in AUSTIN...and everyone...everyone..everyone was there.blah blah blah kicks blah blah blah kicks...haha yeah ..well thats what sneakerheads do. Seriously though the buildout was dope and afforded a lot of open space for the crowd of sneakerheads and hip hoppers that were chilling and just chopping game.

Heres some flicks, i didnt get too camera happy because I was pretty busy talking to folk about kicks, hip hop, and such...big ups to Sneaks Up, Heat Seakers, Matt Sonzala, Richard Henry, OG Photographer, Bun B and everyone else keeping the culture relevant.

Just Finished!! These Custom Pumas were pretty fun to paint...elephant-like-print reversed on both kicks. These sneakers started completely white with the exception of the inside of the sneaker that was gold...along with the gold puma brand.

Traversed to Corpus Christi last week for an art show with the homie Rick Osborne who had a show lined up at House of Rock for the ARTWALK. It was pouring rain and the turnout was still pretty decent...not so bad. I had a chance to hang out with some old friends as well as show some art and work on some new paintings, so all in all ..good times.

Projections of time lapse videos of paintings by Osborne were on display the whole evening.

After the show we went down a few blocks to see what i think was the grand opening of PRODUCE...which from what I gather is 1 part boutique, 1 part gallery, and 1 part Music Studio...a really cool place that I would never think to see that far down in South Texas.

I couldnt find out who ran in...or who to pay for merch so we came back the day after....like 3 times....customer service is not their forte..as we knocked on the windows multiple times and the people insiode just looked up at us and went back to work...aanyways..we finally knocked hard enough one time and had someone answer the door.

The shop part of it is filled with the usual suspects"streetwear brands" The Hundreds and Kid Robot and A Bathing Ape...which was eh, but I suppose its a start for a city that hasnt seen real streetwear almost ever.

After looking through some racks I found some local brand called Blockhead which was dope..so I scooped one. Their vinyl selection was awesome though, and the buildout was real clean and lighted...thats whats up.

While in Downtown Corpus we also ventured into ABOVE COMMON. Above Common is an independent streetwear brand that stocks both their own line of Tees and other cool brands such as Diamond I believe. The shop also carries some nice fitted caps as well as skateboard decks, magazines and cool books.

South Austin Soul Rent

South Austin Soul is Austin's newest...for lack of a better word...creative compound. The large space allows the non-profit to showcase and network artists, musicians, videographers, dancers...and well pretty much any type of creatives. The space allows for workshops, a concert venue, an art gallery, a meeting place, and studio space. The project is headed by Fifth Gallery artist, John Weber who is becoming quickly known for his Stainless Steel kinetic sculpture work.

Anyways-we helped out with their "RENT" party this past week and snapped some shots. The art was great..probably well over 20 artists were represented on many walls. Raffle prizes included a John Weber sculpture piece, Marc Zuazua Prints, original paintings and a sweet old school record player with a huge case courtesy of Far Out Furnishings.

Music was provided by many great local bands, hip hop acts, and DJ's. heres some pics. The spot is located on Manchaca and S.Lamar directly behind Far Out Furnishings.

We will be repping THE FIFTH GALLERY in Corpus Christi at House Of Rock for the OSBORNE LIVE ART SHOW.
The show will feature live art from artist Rick Osborne, who we susbequently also show many of his works at THE FIFTH.

Other artists include Marc Zuazua, Jessica Grummond, Steve Tomkins, Patrick Richards, Servando Hinojosa, Jared Miranda, and Eddie Herrerra.

stayed up until sunset to get tghis picture of the sun coming over the mountains in El Paso, TX last week....real cool-had a chance to play with a lot of camera settings. Since I am used to shooting low light quick moving concert shots,, I welcomed a chance to shoot a really great landscape.

SOUTH AUSTIN SOUL

South Austin Soul is a new creative community/gallery/venue/studio that we are now a part of.

The venue will be housing creative workshops, screen movies, teach yoga, give local musicians a spot for open jams, sunday brunching and a lot of other really cool struff in the works.

The gallery is still currently being worked hard on to finish out, but they will be celebrating it with a Documentary screening of an insight on the lives of artists Allysa Flores, Rob McCowan, Ciara Blossom, Sarah Shellard, as well as FIFTH GALLERY artists Marc Zuazua, Lucas Negrete, and John Weber.

The screening of the documentary which is from 3-6 at the Alamo Drafthouse South (1120 S. Lamar) The creenining will be followed by an art show at High Ball (which is in the same shopping center as the drafthouse) from 7pm-2am. The art show will feature music by The Jacob Jam Collective, DJ Rockwell, DJ Happy Happy James, and KB the Boo Bonic.

This is actually new to you guys anyways--this was a concept drawing for rapper, Zeale's cd "Haters and Robots" ...turns out it ended up looking nothing like the cd cover, but I've always like it. The drawing is now framed and hanging at THE FIFTH GALLERY for the current Artobots show.
